Suddenly it's impossible to drive on the 405, or ride an escalator, elevator, or go on a plane.
It's not the thing, itself, that has become fearful (it wasn't always fearful), but your own reaction to it is now scaring you. There's a fear that your fear means you will never feel normal again. Sam came with an elevator phobia. She felt that if she got into an elevator, it might somehow escape the elevator shaft and fly out of control.
She managed her life around avoidance: So she had to climb the stairs at her office, sometimes in some jeopardy (depending on what she had to carry). She couldn't participate in anything located on a high floor. She couldn't fly. The longer her phobia continued, the worse it got, so that by the time she came to see me, she was unable to think of any elevator without panic.
